Dr. Nidal Shoukeir Meets EU Special Representative for the Gulf Region Hon. Luigi Di Maio in Brussels

“Dialogue remains the most powerful path toward peace”

Dr. Nidal Shoukeir, Executive Board Director of the International Committee on Countering Extremist and Hate Speech (ICCEHS), met with Hon. Luigi Di Maio, the European Union Special Representative for the Gulf region, at his office in Brussels.

During the meeting, Hon. Di Maio and Dr. Shoukeir discussed issues of mutual concern related to the growing dangers of extremist rhetoric and hate speech, and the urgent need to promote responsible communication that encourages dialogue, understanding, and sustainable peace. The discussion also addressed the current situation in the Middle East, with particular attention to developments in the Gulf Region.

Dr. Shoukeir presented the mission, vision, and strategic objectives of the International Committee on Countering Extremist and Hate Speech, highlighting its role as an international platform dedicated to confronting extremist narratives, combating hate speech, and promoting dialogue, tolerance, and responsible communication on a global scale. He also outlined the committee’s recent initiatives and international activities aimed at strengthening cooperation with European institutions and global partners in addressing the challenges posed by extremist discourse, digital radicalization, and misinformation.

Dr. Shoukeir stated: “In an era where words can ignite conflict or build bridges, responsible communication has become a strategic necessity. Dialogue remains the most powerful instrument we have to prevent extremism and to promote peace between societies.”

For his part, Hon. Di Maio welcomed the work of the committee and praised initiatives that promote dialogue, moderation, and intercultural understanding, particularly in the context of strengthening relations between Europe and the Gulf region.

Hon. Di Maio noted: “Countering hate speech and extremist narratives requires international cooperation and sustained dialogue. Initiatives that promote responsible communication and mutual understanding are essential for building more resilient and peaceful societies.”

Regarding the situation in the Gulf, both sides expressed concern about current regional tensions and emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and constructive dialogue. They also stressed the importance of standing in solidarity with partners in the Gulf states during these sensitive and uncertain times, and reaffirmed their support for initiatives that promote regional stability, cooperation, and peaceful dialogue.

The meeting also explored potential areas of collaboration in research, policy dialogue, and international initiatives designed to combat hate speech and prevent the spread of extremist ideologies.

The International Committee on Countering Extremist and Hate Speech (ICCEHS) continues to work with global partners to advance strategies that promote responsible communication, protect social cohesion, and support international efforts to counter extremism and intolerance.
